First censored magazine publication in ''Neva'', March, April and May 1969. First book publication in 1971, text further altered to comply with censors' demands. Text restored by Boris Strugatsky in 1992. Subsequent Russian language editions introduced minor changes based on their editors' research. The English language version, "Prisoners of Power", was based on the censored 1971 version. Note: The literal translation of the Russian title is "Inhabited Island". It is used in Wikipedia and other sources, but the novel has only appeared in English as "Prisoners of Power".
