Notes:
Water R. Popp and Marie Popp Bio:
After World War II, Marie and Walter attended the Art Students League in New York City where they met. In the 1950’s Walter made a living as a sought after science fiction illustrator. Much of his work from that era has been featured in science fiction anthologies. He gets many calls by collectors seeking his autograph and artwork from that era. One of his works was the backdrop for a recent New York Play.
"I never saved any of that orginal artwork," Walter says, "in those days you were lucky to sell a piece and get $30."
Not to make the same mistake twice, he now saves all the original artwork for his Regency covers. These are meticulously painted in acrylic with a hand that has been painting since he was 5 years old. His father was also an illustrator, and young Walter’s earliest memories are of working in his father’s shop painting furniture. "That was the style then, and my father had a small business," he recalls, "that was how I got started--I liked it!"
Walter and Marie work together on the Regencies. Walter is quick to admit that Marie has every bit of the talent and skill that Walter has. They each sing their own work.
Copyright 2000 Victor Popp
