The author holds a B.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana (1965) and an M.A. in Theatre, also from the U. of I. (1967). In addition, he did three years of doctoral work in film and theatre, but left in 1970 without taking his orals or completing his dissertation to work professionally as a writer-producer-director in the advertising industry in his home town of San Juan, Puerto Rico. His father, James Herbert Stevens, was born in Rantoul, Illinois, in 1919. His mother, MarÃÂa Estrella Stevens (née Arce), was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, in the same year. His brother, Paul Henry Stevens, was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, in 1947. He married Tita Stevens (née Palmer) in 1971. They have two children: Ian James (born 1976) and Tara Marina (born 1978).
