Notes:

After serving in the Austrian air force during World War I, he became a writer who helped to popularize spaceflight in Germany during the 1920's. Instrumental in creating the Society for Space Travel, whose core members later formed the amateur rocket club Raketenflugplatz (Rocket Port), whose membership included %%A,Willy Ley%% and Werner von Braun. Max Valier was the first casualty in the development of the liquid-fueled rocket, killed while experimenting with a rocket-car engine.
