Creator of Perry Mason. Settled with his family in Oroville, California in 1902. Worked as a legal clerk and passing the California bar in 1911. Earned a reputation for defending the Chinese community with unconventional defenses. Formed the law firm of Orr and Gardner in 1916 in Ventura CA. Started writing fiction in 1921. His first published story was "Nellie's Naughty Nighty" appearing in Breezy Stories. The first Perry Mason book (The Case of the Velvet Claws) was published in 1933.
