Notes:

The son of exiled French Protestants, Maturin grew up in poverty, training to be a curate for the church. Much of his early work appeared either anonymously or under pseudonym. His 1820 novel "Melmoth the Wanderer" is of substantial influence. The sequel "Melmoth Reconciled" (1835) was written by %%A,Honoré de Balzac%%.
