Published in 1986 a book-length introductory essay, O Que É Ficção Científica. In 1989 he became the first Brazilian to win the Caminho Award, a contest for original books in the Portuguese language, for A Espinha Dorsal da Memória (The Backbone of Memory), a collection of sf stories.. The book received good reviews in Portugal. It was only published in Brazil in 1996, in a double volume that includes Tavares's second collection, Mundo Fantasmo, which was published also in Portugal in 1997. His first novel, A Máquina Voadora, was printed in 1995, and received good attention from the Brazilian cultural press. Tavares works with postmodern aesthetic and metafictional elements. He is highly influenced by Argentinean %%A,Jorge Luís Borges%%.
