- Notes:
- Stated first edition.
- 5000 copies printed per Chalker/Owings.
- The copies from this printing were issued with two different jackets. This record is for the second state jacket by Ric Binkley. Chalker/Owings speculate that there may have been two bindings split 3000/2000. However, the bindings appear to be identical.
- The jacket is blue and the back lists Gnome Press titles through 1953.
- The last name of Samuel Anthony Peeples is misspelled as "Peebles" on the contents page.
- Peeples wrote a preface to the section "A Dictionary of Science Fiction." His essay (which is called "Preface" in the book itself) is more aptly titled "Preface to Dictionary" on the contents page.
- According to the contents page "The Interstellar Zoo" is a "special descriptive story" written to accompany Edd Cartier's illustrations (see next note). The text of the story is found on pages 31-32 and 49-52.
- The title "Life on Other Worlds" refers to 16 pages of full color illustrations by Edd Cartier found on pages 33-48. That title, which is the only title found in the book for this section, was printed solely on the contents page.
