Online edition available from the Library of Congress Digital Rare Book Collection via LCCN May 17, 1900 is the publication date listed in numerous books and websites. That is the date Baum wrote in the first copy of the book that came off the printing press, which was then bound by hand. The Annotated Wizard of Oz says "the trade got its first glimpse of the new book at the Chicago Book Fair ... July 5 to 20". It also says the official copyright date was August, 1900. The first reviews of the book were in September, 1900.
