Notes: The First London edition by Ward, Lock & Co. with a 1904 date on the title page. Bound in a blue beveled cloth with gold and white (with a pink cast) stamping to the front cover and the spine. The white on the spine has perished and the spine has darkened from sun exposure. All page edges are gilt. The title page is tipped in and and appears to be a cancel title page. The title page is printed on a different, thinner paper, from that which was used for the rest of the book. The back of the title page has "Printed From American Plates". The pages appear to be the same as those used for the American edition, and I think they were imported from the U.S. and supplied with a replacment (cancel) title page. The book has 50 glossy tipped in black and white plates by C. M. Coolidge, although the plate at page 12 is missing from this copy, and the plate from page 252 (per List of Illustrations) has been moved to be the frontispiece.
