- Verifier's copy (found in Hong Kong) has the copyright page replaced with Chinese text relating to the publication, retaining "First printing" and "First American Edition" but discarding with the number line, ISBN and LCCN data, as appeared in the original Houghton Mifflin publication. ISBN appears on the back cover only, above the code "6-97065". It appears to be a book club edition for Asian distribution with "Houghton Mifflin" not appearing anywhere in the publication.
- Price retained on the upper right of the inside front cover dustflap.
- Publication has black boards with silver type on the spine, stating only author and title.
- The map of the Realms of the Noldor and the Sindar is on an unnumbered page with a blank reverse inserted between pages 120 and 121. It is not signed but is in the same drawn style as the fold-out Map of Beleriand, and is referred to in Christopher Tolkien's Foreword as being included within the body of the book to make clear at a glance certain locations of Middle Earth (the map is a more detailed view of a small section of the fold-out Map of Beleriand).
- The fold-out Map of Beleriand is attached to a blank endpaper at the back of the book, and is signed "CJRT".
- Month of publication for the original edition was September 1977 (from Locus #205, October 1977) , the code "0977" has been retained on the inside front cover dustflap.
