- Based on style, the uncredited introductory and interstitial material is probably by Jerry Pournelle, but may be by John F. Carr or Roland Green. Of these, "Prolog" and "Discovery" are actual stories, or fictional scenes at least, having characters and dialog. The others are "fictional essays" (essays written from a PoV within the fictional world). The TOC considers most of the fictional essays (other than "Haven") a part of the following story, and most do serve to introduce the following story in some way, but the author's name and story title always follow the "intro", and the writing style of the intros/fictional essays is similar to each other, and generally different from that of the stories being introduced. The lengths of these "intros" or "fictional essays" ranges from 2 paragraphs to 10 pages.
