There is another record for a Playboy hc which is identical apart from the publication date: 1977-07-00. Locus magazine #203 (August 1977) lists that edition in its "Science Fiction Books for July 1977" column. Furthermore, there is a publisher's ad for the book on page 7 of the same magazine which describes it as "The new novel by the authors of The Mote in God's Eye". As at 2024-04-06, the website www.larryniven.org no longer relates to Larry Niven. It is very unlikely that Playboy issued the book twice with a six month interval and the same "First Edition" statement. This 1977-01-00 record is very probably for a non-existent printing. Either the month on the website was incorrect or was transcribed incorrectly to ISFDb.
