- Notes: First edition with "First printed October, 1942" on the copyright page and with no later printings mentioned. 1st issue with correct "5/ - net" price printed on the front jacket flap near the bottom right corner. Bound in light green cloth with darker green stamping to the front cover and the spine. The book was originally issued in October of 1942, this copy has a Christmas gift inscription for 1942. I found an ad listing for the book in the Manchester Guardian for November 25, 1942 with a price of 5/- net. I have seen this 1st Edition book with the jacket price changed to a higher price, so I assume it took awhile for the First Printing to sell out, or possibly a later jacket married to an early book. I have seen later printings listed which mention color plates, but this edition has only black and white illustrations in text, some full page. I have also seen copies listed as First Editions in a turquise colored cloth, which I assume is either a remainder binding, or an early reprinting, one copy so bound had a "6/-" priced jacket.
