- Notes: LCCN [1st ed.] publ date 1954-06-15 per Kirkus review published same day price from New York Times review 1954-04-18 New York, Harcourt, Brace [1954], "first edition" stated on the copyright page, it is bound in a gray linen cloth with green stamping. The dust jacket has a printed price of $2.75 in the upper right corner of the front flap which also starts a long blurb of this title. The rear panel has a list of 7 "Other Books" and the rear flap finishes the blurb from the front flap. One copy I own has a sticker from the New York Herald Tribune naming it an Honor Book from their Spring Festival. This copy came from the Forrest J. Ackeman collection, bought when it was being dispersed on EBay. Another copy, in a tattered jacket, has HORN BOOK stamped on the front end page from when it was in the Horn Book Magazine archive which was sold off several years ago. I also own a 5th printing which has E.8.60 on the copyright page for 5th Printing.August.1960 and the price on the jacket is still $2.75. --------------- A Weekly Reader Children's Book Club edition also exists that is marked "first edition" on the copyright page. It is a book club, and it even mentions the date of 1955 (one year after the First Edition) on the copyright page where it also mentions that it is a Book Club. For some reason people seem to want to look past the book club markings and concentrate on the "first edition" printed on the page. (See the 1955 listing for more Info) The real First Edition is printed on better paper that does not brown, or at least not more than the usual trade edition book does.
