  • Year: 1831
  • Publisher: Colburn and Bentley

  • Title Reference: Frankenstein, or, The Modern Prometheus
  • Notes:
    • The "Bentley Standard Novels" series of 126 volumes included novels partitioned between volumes. Vol. 9 included all of Frankenstein plus the first portion of Frederich Von Schiller's "The Ghost-Seer".
    • This is the first edition to be illustrated. The interior illustrations consist of a frontispiece and title page engraved illustrations (drawing by Holst, engraving by Chevalier).
    • "This edition was heavily revised by Mary Shelley, partially because of pressure to make the story more conservative, and included a new, longer preface by her, presenting a somewhat embellished version of the genesis of the story." (Wikipedia, 2011-11-29).
    • Data from Heritage Auction House and from WorldCat.
    • Worldcat suggests that there are two title pages. One listing the author as "The Author of The Last Man, Perkin Warbeck, &c. &c." and a second engraved title page with Shelly's name. Reginald indicates only the former form of the author credit.
    • The text and images of this edition are available at The Internet Archive. This scan has only the egraved title page and and is missing some of the introductory material. It is also bound with Volume I of a two volume translation of {{A|Friedrich von Schiller}}'s Der Geisterseher, Vol. 10 in the Standard Novels series. This may be a post-publication rebinding of two separately published volumes.
