    • This is the first edition (1947) of the anthology, which differs from the new 1963 one : it contains 33 stories (against 31 for the later version), 14 of which only are common to both publications.
    • This anthology is divided into three sections : "Première partie : Les précuseurs du XVIIIe siècle"(from Cazotte to Sade); "Deuxième partie : L'imagination romantique" (from Nodier to Nerval); "Troisième partie : La cruauté moderne" (from Baudelaire to Apollinaire). These sections disappear in the 1963 version.
    • Each story or group of stories by a specific author is preceded by a bio-bibliographical presentation by Pierre Castex.
    • As some of these stories are in fact excerpts from longer works, their titles have sometimes been made up by the editor.
    • This anthology, as well as its revised 1963 version, are the source of most of Francis Lacassin's Les maîtres de l'étrange et de la peur, published in 2000.
