Primarily known as an author of science fiction novels for young adults her books are still well received by adults. Some paperback and UK editions of her novels appeared under the name Sylvia Engdahl, without "Louise". Engdahl is best known for her novel Enchantress from the Stars, which was a 1971 Newbery Honor book. In August of 2007 Engdahl published an adult visionary fiction novel, entitled Stewards of the Flame. She lives in Oregon with her two cats.
