Tonnies' works have appeared in a variety of small press magazines. His most noteworthy literary achievement to date is his short story collection Illumined Black, in which he examines a variety of bizarre, futuristic, often chilling scenarios (i.e. genetically engineered insects used as cars, virtual reality used in place of physical imprisonment). Tonnies' works have appeared in Next Phase, Implosion, Gaslight and others. Booklist calls him a "mature craftsman."
