McComas worked at Simon & Schuster and was a member of the Mystery Guild of America. Co-edited the seminal anthology Adventures in Time and Space with Raymond J. Healy, in which appeared his first SF story ("Flight into Darkness" as Webb Marlowe). He was co-founding editor of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction with Anthony Boucher from 1949-1954, and remained an advisory editor until 1962.
