- There are three different Scribner, Armstrong editions of this book dated 1874: The first edition; the illustrated, or "complete", edition; and the "popular" edition. The three editions all have completely different covers. The precedence between the other two editions is uncertain, but L.W. Currey suggests they may have been published simultaneously. This is the first edition, containing "52 wood-engraved plates after Édouard Riou", included in the pagination.
- L.W. Currey says "Although its title page is dated 1874 [this] edition was published 8 November 1873 at $2.00 per copy", and we use that date here.
- The Jules Verne Encyclopedia further states that this edition was bound identically to the 1871 Griffith and Farran (UK) edition and with the same text.
