One of the first female authors of the genre, Radcliffe was married to William Radcliffe, editor of the English Chronicle. Radcliffe built upon the proto-Gothic works of Horace Walpole and through the use of female protagonists, developed the Gothic Romance genre. Her work matured with The Mysteries of Udolpho, and reached her peak with The Italian.
